Montrose, Iowa: The closest town, has a lot of interesting history, much of it to do with the Mormons and the crossing of the Mississippi River before their trek to Salt Lake City, Utah. A local group of people started MRI (Montrose River Front Inc.) and has done much in recent years to beautify Montrose. There are a number of historical sites around the town to see and don't miss the Watermelon Festival in August.
Keokuk, Iowa: the next closest town 8 miles to the south has a variety of shops, stores, and restaurants to fill your needs. Lock & Dam #19 is located here along with the bridge to Illinois.
Fort Madison, Iowa: 14 miles to the north has a beautiful river front where the Fort is located. The Rodeo and parade in September also draws a crowd. There are many interesting shops and restaurants to visit.
Nauvoo, Illinois: across the river, where you will see a multitude of famous landmarks and interesting history relating to the Mormons. The Temple is quite a site to see.
There are many artistic and interesting festivals in the surrounding towns, which occur at various times througout the summer and into the fall.
